Well Dressed: Cropping Up in NYC
While packing for our trip to NYC this week, I wanted to take some stylish pieces that bridge the gap from summer to fall but also casual to dressy, and I chose two of my favorite skirts and three different crop tops that were interchangeable. The crop top craze over the last year has run the gamut from almost-bra tops (typically styled under a jacket but one of my favorite bloggers Song of Style wears them alone – and looks great doing so) to longer styles that are still considered cropped but are much more conservative. The only prerequisite with these tops is they should be styled with something high-waisted on the bottom. Long gone are the days of low-waisted pants and crop tops à la Britney Spears “Hit Me Baby One More Time.” Whether it’s skinny jeans, a skirt or shorts, something high-waisted should sit at your natural waist (slightly above your belly button, below your bottom ribs and above your hip bones).
I styled the look in a variety of ways in the galleries below to give you some ideas based on your personal style and items you may own. While the looks may seem summery, it’s as easy as throwing a jacket on for fall or winter. For the striped Opening Ceremony skirt, I’d choose a cropped leather jacket and for the ALC skirt, I’d choose something in a knit (IRO makes great ones). I didn’t style jewelry for each look, but accessories are a great equalizer for any outfit as they provide balance. For example, with the brogues and a leather skirt, choose something feminine; for the looks with heels, add something with a more edgy, masculine feel (chain link necklaces are very in for fall and winter). The sun terrace at the Peninsula New York made for a great photo spot surrounded by Midtown-Manhattan skyscrapers.
P.S. According to this Wall Street Journal article, crop tops are sticking around through next spring/summer as evidenced by the Spring 2014 runway shows happening in NYC as we speak – so it might be a good investment if you don’t own one.
